About CANBERRA

For 21,000 years the Canberra region has been home to the Ngunnawal people. When Europeans settled the area in the early 1820s hundreds of Aboriginals lived in the area.

Canberra is one of the world's greatest examples of urban planning and landscape architecture. It is an artificial city created as a result of interstate rivalries between New South Wales and Victoria, both of whom wanted the home of the Parliament of Australia to be in their capital. In 1908, 2330 sq km of sheep grazing land in New South Wales became the site for the new national capital. The Commonwealth Government acquired the capital in 1911, and launched a competition for the design of a city to house 25,000 politicians and public servants. The competition was won by the American Walter Burley Griffin, who based his design on a series of geometrically precise circles and axes. His wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, also an architect, worked with him on the design.

Today the national capital is a thriving cultural city with broad roads, beautiful parklands and many elegant buildings surrounded by natural bushland. Views of the city and surrounds can be seen from lookouts at Mt Ainslie and Red Hill. Canberra is home to Australia's Parliament House, the National Gallery, the Australian War Memorial, the National Museum of Australia, CSIRO Discovery Centre and the National Film and Archive centre. There are many foreign embassies, some designed in the unique style of their home country.
