About BINALONG

There was a large Aboriginal population in the area prior to European occupation, mostly of the Ngunnawal tribe. The name of the town is said to originate from an Aboriginal word meaning 'towards a high place' . It may also have originated from Bennelong, the name of a prominent Aborigine. The first known group of Europeans came to the area in 1821, and several years later, settlers followed bringing flocks of sheep and marking the beginning of the local wool industry.

Cobb & Co. coaches stopped in the town in its early days, and it became a point for gold shipments from Lambing Flat when the railway arrived in 1876. Johnny Gilbert, a member of Ben Hall's bushranging gang was killed during a gunfight near Binalong in 1865, and his grave can be found on the outskirts of town.

The poet Banjo Patterson moved to a property near Binalong at the age of five in 1869, and a number of his poems were influenced by the time he spent here during his youth.

Today, Binalong is a quiet little village, noted for its historic buildings.
