About COLLECTOR

The town reputedly derives its name from the Aboriginal word 'colegdar'. In 1837 a postal service began from Goulburn to Lake George and on to Yass. Collector was developed as a staging post and eventually had five inns and quite a few stores. The Barton Highway then passed through the town when Canberra became the national capital.

Today the town is bypassed by the Federal Highway. Local attractions include the Bushranger Hotel (the bushranger Ben Hall and his gang held up the publican in 1865, and a local constable was shot and killed during the robbery). A memorial to the constable can be found in the cemetery of the Anglican Church. The pub contains various items of memorabilia to this event including a collection of old guns.
