The falls are located at the north-eastern end of the Morton National Park, one of the state's largest parks. The waterfall was originally named Throsby's Waterfall, after Charles Throsby, one of the first settlers in the Southern Highlands. In 1850 Sir Charles Fitzroy, the Governor of NSW, renamed the falls. In 1882 the road to the site was improved after 4,000 acres had been reserved.

Morton National Park features rugged sandstone cliffs, deep forrested valleys, and the Clyde, Endrick, Kangaroo and Shoalhaven Rivers. These rivers hosted the water races of the old goldfields in the west of the park.

The Falls have a huge diversity of flora and fauna, and due to the size of the park there are a number of landforms, habitats and climatic conditions. The main walking tracks are the East Rim Walking Track and the West Rim Walking Track, both with lookouts giving spectacular views of the falls - although most photographs of the falls are taken from the Jersey Lookout on the West Rim Walking Track.
