About ROBERTSON

Dense rainforest once covered the entire plateau which initially kept settlers away,
but it was eventually logged to establish homes and farms.

In 1861 the Land Act of Sir John Robertson, former premier of NSW, cleared the way for the establishment of the town which took his name.

Following a survey by Surveyor Campbell in 1863, his town plan was approved in 1865, and the first lots were sold in that year, the village first being known as Yarrawa. A demand for local timber opened up the district in the 1870s following the establishment of steam driven sawmills.

Robertson is situated at the top of Macquarie Pass (opened in 1898) and is in the largest potato growing area in NSW due to its cool climate, good rainfall and rich red volcanic basalt soil. There is an old dairy factory at the eastern end of town, and Robertson is the centre of a thriving dairy industry.

The surrounding countryside is well known for its bushwalks and its proximity to Belmore Falls, Carrington Falls and Fitzroy Falls. It was the location for the Australian movie 'Babe'.
