About SUTTON FOREST

The Sutton Forest area was originally called Cooloorigan by Charles Throsby when he explored the country with Hamilton Hume in 1817. Governor Macquarie visited the area in 1820 with settlers, one of whom was Charles Wright. Wright took up land there after working as a Constable at Parramatta.

Governor Macquarie was impressed with the beauty of the area and the soil quality, and in 1820 he named the settlement after Charles Manners Sutton (the speaker of the British House of Commons). The village was not officially established until 1854. As with other towns in the district bushrangers frequented the area from the 1830s to the 1870s.

Sutton Forrest today is a tiny settlement, with the feel of an old English village.
