About YASS

The Ngunnawal Aborigines lived in the area prior to European occupation, and the town name is derived from 'Yhar', an Aboriginal word said to mean 'running water'. The exploratory party of Hamilton Hume visited the Yass Plains in 1821, and Hume returned with William Hovell in 1824. Settlers followed and brought with them flocks of sheep, starting the local wool industry. The township was gazetted in 1837.

Yass Valley has its own unique charm and country friendliness. The main street is full of architectural treasures reminiscent of early settlement.

Burrinjuck Dam was built in the early 1900's as a water storage system for the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. The dam is a popular attraction and offers cruises, water sports, fishing, camping and bushwalking. The town was traditionally centred on wool, sheep studs and agriculture, however there are now a number of vineyards in the area.
