About YOUNG

The area was occupied by the Burrowmunditory tribe prior to the arrival of white settlers. There was European exploration along the Lachlan River and the Murrumbidgee but the first to investigate the site was pastoralist James White in 1826. He established Burrangong station. Gold was discovered in 1860 at Lambing Flat (part of the station), and caused a major rush of prospectors. Young was officially gazetted in 1869.

Barley, maize, wheat and oats were cultivated from the 1860s, and fruit from the 1890s. Cherries, for which the town is now famed, were cultivated from 1878. Other local industries to emerge during the 1800s included a sawmill, a flour mill, a brewery, a tannery and boot factory, brickworks, a meat chilling works and a butter factory.

The arrival of the railway in 1885 facilitated market access for local agricultural industries. Young was gazetted in 1869 and was the first town in New South Wales to install electricity to streets and homes in 1889. Today, Young is renowned for being a diverse agricultural district famous for various types of fruits, grains, sheep, cattle, pigs, mining, steel fabrication and a pipeline authority.
