About Australian Capital Territory
ACT and Canberra.
Canberra is a city that was purpose built to be the Nation’s capital, so in effect you have the sophisticated seat of Government, the Australian Capital Territory, sitting peacefully in the middle of rural NSW. The city is surrounded by Black Mountain and Mount Ainslie to the north, and by Namadgi National Park to the South. These are all worthwhile destinations for those who want to see the beautiful countryside surrounding the nation’s capital.
The city was built according the designs of architect Walter Burley Griffin, who envisaged a modern city neatly arranged around an artificial lake. While cities rarely grow according to plan, Canberra has kept its low-key spaciousness, with suburbs radiating out from its classical central plan.
As the Nation’s capital, Canberra has a vast array of monuments and national buildings that house significant Australian cultural treasures. If you start with the National Capital Exhibition in the Rotunda at Regatta point, you can become acquainted with the history of the city itself. The display includes models and photographs, and a great view of the Lake Burley Griffin and the imposing Parliamentary Triangle. Parliament House sits at the apex of the triangle, and Commonwealth and Kings Avenues radiate outwards from there. The streetscape in the middle is perfectly symmetrical, and accommodates Canberra’s National Buildings, which in turn house a cultural treasure trove. These include the National Gallery, with its impressive collection and lakeside sculpture garden. The National Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of sculpture and assemblage called ‘Reinvention’. Across the road from the National Gallery is the National Library, which is currently hosting ‘The Ballets Russes in Australia 1936-1940’.
Also within the triangle is Commonwealth Park, where Floriade festival is held in the springtime, Old Parliament House and Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre, where you can see animatronic dinosaurs or experience an earthquake. If this isn’t enough, desperate dinosaur fans can find more dinosaurs at the National Dinosaur Museum, with ten full size replica dinosaur skeletons and many real life fossils. The National Film and Sound Archive has free inactive exhibitions featuring hundreds of film and sound clips, costumes and photos, as well as screening vintage films on weekends
The Australian War Memorial sits at the end of Anzac Parade, directly in line with Parliament House. A central court is lined with panels listing the names of those who died in action, and this court leads into Hall of Memory with its golden dome and stained glass windows. The rest of the War Memorial serves as a museum.
Further afield, there is Royal Australian Mint, and the Australian Institute of Sport, both of which conduct tours, the Zoo and Aquarium, and the National Museum. The National Portrait Gallery at Parkes has 400 portraits of famous faces from Ned Kelly to Nick Cave.
Those who prefer science can visit Mt Stromlo Observatory, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla where you can see moon rocks and a real-live astronaut’s suit.
For something out of the ordinary, don’t miss the miniature village of Cockington Green, just outside Canberra off the Barton Highway. There are replicas of famous buildings from all over the world, beautiful gardens and a mini steam train ride for the kids.
