About MEDLOW BATH

Medlow Bath is a small town located near the highest point of the Blue Mountains, between Katoomba and Blackheath. The town is dominated by the Hydro Majestic Hotel - the town's main commercial establishment.

Medlow Bath is surrounded by the Blue Mountains National Park and has been subject to bushfire threats many times during its history. The most recent of these, in summer 2003 came within metres of destroying the Hydro Majestic.

The town is served by a railway station of the same name located on the Blue Mountains railway line; the station is immediately adjacent to the hotel.

The origin of the name is uncertain, however, it is thought that is either a corruption of the Aboriginal word for Megalong or the name of a small town in the north of England. The location of Brown’s Sawmill at this location saw the first railway platform opened in 1880 as Brown’s Siding, Pulpit Hill. This was changed to Medlow in 1883.

Sydney businessman Mark Foy purchased three properties on the edge of the cliff in the early 1900s and incorporated them into the complex known as the Hydro Majestic. The name was changed again in 1903 to Medlow Bath to distinguish it from another Medlow and to honour the imminent opening of Mark Foy's Hydropathic Bath.

The current population of Medlow Bath is 504.
