About MOUNT VICTORIA

Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell constructed his Pass of Victoria in 1832. His surveyors marked the highest point in the area which appeared on Mitchell's map as One Tree Hill.

In 1849 a toll bar was erected to the east of Victoria Pass at a location called Broughton's Waterhole, which was a popular camping site for travellers and stock. The toll bar cottage still exists today.

The town's name was changed in 1876 when the post office was built.

By the late 19th century Mount Victoria was a prosperous settlement. There were exclusive private schools and it was known as a popular 'hill station' retreat for wealthy Sydney families who would take the train and stay in the large guest houses or in their own mansions.
