About MOUNT WILSON

The first European into the area may have been the convict Matthew Everingham who may have reached the ridge as early as 1795. However, the first confirmed European into the general area was Archibald Bell Jr who crossed the mountains in 1823, along what was to become Bell's Line of Road.

The area was surveyed by W. R. Govett in 1833, however, it was not until after 1867 that it was rediscovered by George Bartley Bowen. In 1868 the Deputy Surveyor-General P.F. Adams, while visiting the survey camp, named the area Mount Wilson after John Bowie Wilson, the Minister for Lands.
