About OBERON

The area was inhabited by the Wiradjuri peoples prior to European settlement. Gold was discovered on the Fish River in 1823 and settlement along the river and in the area between Oberon and Taralga began that same decade. Settlers from the plains between Oberon and Taralga also began during this time. Settlers from the plains brought their stock to the lush countryside of the Oberon district in periods of drought. Grants of land began to be taken up along the Fish and Campbell Rivers in the 1820s.

The site was known as Bullock Flat by the early pioneers. In 1863 the name was changed to Oberon (taken from the King of the Fairies in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream') and it was declared a village.

There have been silver and copper mines in the Oberon district and the area is still renowned for its sapphires and gemstones.
