About the Blue Mountains Region
Blue Mountains
The Blue Mountains lie to the west of Sydney, one of Australia’s unique World Heritage sites. Blue Mountains towns are ranged along a single ridge in the middle of miles of pristine bushland, rising higher and higher till it reaches 1068m above sea level at Mt Victoria. As the towns get higher, the climate becomes more temperate, with frost and mist in winters and soothing breezes on summer evenings.
The Mountains get their name from the blue haze that is visible from the plains. The phenomenon is called ‘rayleighs scattering’, and is caused by light refracting through eucalyptus oil rising from the trees.
Each town has it own walks and features. Some of the better known walks are the Jellybean pool at Glenbrook, the Sassafras Gully at Springwood, the National Pass Walk from Wentworth Falls, and Wall’s Cave walk at Blackheath, but there are many more walks for various levels of fitness, and maps and information are available the national parks and wildlife at Lapstone, Katoomba and Blackheath. Some walks are strictly for hikers, but guided adventure tours which include rock climbing and abseiling are available. Day trips can also be arranged from Katoomba to visit Hartley Historic Village or to Jenolan Caves.
Probably the best known Blue Mountains landmark is the Three Sisters is at Katoomba. Right next to them is the Giant Staircase which take you down to the valley below. You can also go for a ride on the cablecar at Scenic World for views of the Three Sisters, the whole Jamison Valley and Mt Solitary. Scenic World also has the steepest incline railway in the world, which takes you down to a walkway at the base of the valley.
The Blue Mountains was a popular holiday destination from the 1890’s to the 1930’s and many of the beautiful old buildings built during this time of prosperity are still there, many having been restored in recent years. Some of these, like the railway station café in Mt Victoria, Norman Lindsay’s former home at Faulconbridge, and Leuralla, once the mountain retreat of the Evatt family, have become museums and galleries. Others, like the Carrington Hotel and the Paragon Café in Katoomba are still trading after almost a hundred years. There were also many magical gardens planted at this time, including the Everglades at Leura and the Rhododendron Garden in Blackheath which are still open to the public.
The Mountains is a treasure trove of antiques and collectables, with vintage shops and antique markets selling everything from fashion to furniture. All the towns have a great range of cafes and specialty shops. Some of the best known are the Leura lolly shop, Selwood Science and Puzzles at Hazelbrook, and vintage toys shop Trains, Planes and Automobiles at Mt Victoria.
Combine a visit with any one of the Blue Mountains’ seasonal round of Festivals. Celebrate Christmas in July at Yulefest, watch the Winter Magic Parade, welcome spring with Leura Gardenfest or come for the Folk/Root and Blues Music Festival.
