About DUBBO

Dubbo is located on the Macquarie River. The Wiradjuri Aboriginal people are believed to have occupied the area prior to European settlement. John Oxley and his party passed the site in 1818, and the first permanent settler was Robert Dulhunty who came to the area in the early 1830s. The town was proclaimed in 1849 and became a municipality in 1872.

Wheat, wool production, stock-raising and selling, abattoirs and education centres all contribute to Dubbo being the administrative, commercial and industrial hub of Central Western NSW. Attractions for visitors to the area include the 300-hectare Western Plains Zoo, the Dubbo Gaol, Observatory, Military Museum and the Indidjinart Aboriginal Art and Craft Studio.
