About FORBES

Forbes is located on the Lachlan River and was occupied by the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people prior to European settlement. The party of John Oxley camped near the present town site in 1817 and named the site ''Camp Hill''. Forbes became a municipality in 1870 and the town was named ''Forbes'' after the first Chief Justice of NSW, Francis Forbes.

Bushrangers Frank Gardiner, Ben Hall and Johnnie Gilbert were active in the area in the 1860s. Ben Hall was shot dead in 1865 near the town and is buried in the Forbes cemetery.
The economy of the area is based on beef and hay exports, wool, wheat, crops, fruit and vegetables, saleyards and an abattoir. Nearby, the Lachlan Vintage Village displays the culture which existed around the discovery of gold in 1861, and mined until 1900. The visitor can visit rural attractions such as alpaca and deer farms, dairies, irrigation farms and feed lots.
