About GILGANDRA

Gilgandra is situated on the Castlereagh River at the junction of the Newell, Oxley and Castlereagh Highways. The Wiradjuri Aboriginal people occupied the area prior to European settlement, and it is believed the town name is derived from their language and means ''long waterhole''. The first stock runs in the district were established by squatters in the 1830s.
Today Gilgandra is a service centre to the mixed farming area of the district. It is publicised as The Home of the Coo-ees, a reference to 35 local men who commenced the first recruiting march of WW1 in 1915, marching from Gilgandra and arriving in Sydney six weeks later with 263 men. They announced their arrival in the towns on their route with coo-ee, the bushman's cry for help.

Local attractions include the Gilgandra Native Flora Reserve, the Observatory, Orana Cactus World, Jack McGirr Arboretum and the Rural Museum.
