About GULGONG

Gulgong is an historic gold town. The Wiradjuri Aboriginal people occupied the area prior to European settlement and the town name is said to mean deep waterhole. In 1822, William Cox's sons extended their holdings into the Gulgong area and established the ''Guntawang'' cattle run. They left due to conflict with the local Aboriginals, however, the Rouse brothers took cattle to the property.

Gold was discovered in the 1860s but the initial finds were negligible until a major find sparked off a gold rush in 1870. As many as 20,000 people were in the area by 1872 when the town was gazetted. The gold had dwindled by 1876 but the arrival of the railway boosted the economy, and wool and wheat production contributed to the town. Mining, a flour mill and rural industries are the mainstays of modern Gulgong.

Gulgong is a well-preserved example of a 19th-Century Australian town with narrow winding streets which were originally bullock tracks. Weatherboard, iron, stone and brick buildings with iron-lace verandahs, wooden cottages, horse troughs and hitching rails give the town an antiquated air.
