About HILL END

Hill End is an important historic ghost town, surrounded by rugged mountain and gorge country. The town was formerly known as Bald Hill and was renamed Hillend in 1862. Alluvial gold was discovered in 1851 and the town went through boom/bust periods until the town really went into decline in the late 1940s.

Painters Russell Drysdale and Donald Friend led other artists to the town in recognition of its unique character. Many of the buildings in the town were demolished over the years and the town would have fallen into permanent decline, but luckily it was proclaimed an historic site in 1967 and the National Parks and Wildlife Service began restoring the remaining buildings which dated from the 1870s. A self-guided walking tour pamphlet is available from the Tourist Information Centre.
