About PARKES

The area around Parkes was inhabited by the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people prior to European settlement. Explorer Thomas Mitchell camped north of the town in 1835. Reef gold was located north of the current town site in 1862 and the field was worked for five years before declining. More substantial gold was found in the area in 1871, most notably at Bushmans Hill, which was renamed Parkes in 1873 after the Governor of NSW, Henry Parkes.

The CSIRO completed the erection of the first big-dish antenna Radio Telescope in the Southern Hemisphere in 1961. The visitors centre features various interactive aspects of the telescope's operation, together with souvenirs and posters and project material. Parkes became the marshalling and dispersal terminal for eastern Australia after installation of the standard gauge rail system in 1969.

Parkes is now a service centre to the local mining, wheat-storage, crops, wool and livestock industries. In the area, Goobang National Park has a variety of vegetation types and plant species, and rare and endangered animal species.
