About the Central NSW / Explorer Country Region

Central New South Wales is an area of the state extending west from the Hunter Valley and Blue Mountains regions to the far western area referred to as Outback NSW. As the area is steeped in early Australian pioneer history, it is often referred to as Explorer Country. The many country towns, originally settled by farmers and graziers, subsequently became a popular destination for landscape artists.

Other settlements, such as Hill End and Sofala, were established by miners during the goldrush.

Among the towns popular with tourists through Central NSW include Cowra, Orange, Mudgee, Dubbo and Bathurst.

The region also abounds with National Parks and reserves, such as the Warrumbungle Mountains, Wollemi National Park and Abercrombie Caves.

Bathurst, about 200 km west of Sydney, is the oldest inland settlement in Australia, and is one of the most commonly used gateways to Explorer Country. It is also a major centre for motor racing.

Further west, Mudgee, Orange and Cowra have become famous for the excellent restaurants and accommodation. Cowra, the site of a tragic failed mass breakout of Japanese prisoners of war in 1944, commemorates the loss of life with its beautiful and tranquil Japanese Garden.

North of Cowra is Dubbo, the location of the Western Plains Zoo, the first zoo in the country to have been designed on the open range principle, in which animals and visitors are separated by concealed moats, rather than bars.

The unpolluted atmosphere of the region has also lead to its housing a variety of astronomical observatories, including the radiothermal telescope in Parkes (''The Dish'' from the film of the same name) and Siding Springs and Skywatch near Coonabarabran in the Warrumbungles.

The Warrumbungle mountains, a region of past volcanic activity with unusual lava formations, are the major scenic attraction in the the most-visited national park in NSW outside of the Sydney metropolitan area parks.
