About the Hawkesbury Region

The Hawkesbury region of NSW is the area around the Hawkesbury River, which, with its tributaries, virtually encircles the metropolitan region of Sydney. The region includes a number of historical towns, including Windsor, Richmond, Brooklyn, Berowra Waters, Wisemans Ferry and Bilpin.

Windsor, on the Hawkesbury River on the north-western outskirts of the Sydney, was established around 1791, making it the third-oldest place of British settlement on the Australian continent. It contains many buildings dating from the first decades of the 19th century, including the Windsor Courthouse, the Macquarie Arms Hotel (the oldest inn in Australia), and St Matthew’s Anglican Church (in the graveyard of which rest the remains of many First Fleeters and other notable pioneers). The nearby Rouse Hill Estate, established in 1813, is also considered to house one of the countries most significant collections of period furniture, artefacts and gardens.

Not far away Richmond also boasts many historic houses, as well as a museum exhibiting items from both Aboriginal and early European times.

Brooklyn occupies a narrow strip of tidal waterfront land aligned east - west along the southern bank of the Hawkesbury, and is well known for its oysters (the 2005 film Oyster Farmer was filmed in and around this area). A short ferry trip away is Dangar Island, which is relatively heavily populated but permits no private cars. Houseboating in this region of the Hawkesbury River is a popular attraction.

Further upstream, the river runs between impressive cliffs of sandstone, surrounded by national parks, such as the Dharug National Park and Yengo National Park, which give shelter to man species of native wildlife. The small town of Wisemans Ferry - named for its ferry service across the Hawkesbury, established in 1827 - is a popular picnic destination in this area.

In the highlands the orchards of Bilpin and Mt Tomar Botanic Gardnes are not to be missed.
