About the Hunter Coast Region

The Hunter Coast is the section of the coast of New South Wales to the immediate north and south of the city of Newcastle, which lies at the mouth of the Hunter River, approximately 160 km north of Sydney.

The Newcastle metropolitan area is the second most populated area in New South Wales. It is also the largest coal export harbour in the world, the entire Hunter Region being exceptionally rich in coal deposits. Once considered primarily of industrial importance, the city has become both more populous and more attractive to tourists in recent decades. With the closure of the steel works in 2000, its era of extensive heavy industry passed, and many of the remaining manufacturing industries located themselves well away from the city itself.

Many tourists are drawn to Newcastle’s exceptional beaches such as Nobbys, Bar, Merewether and Stockton Beaches. These and other popular beaches are all patrolled and are all within 5 km of the city centre. The 5 km Bathers Way, a coastal walk from Nobbys to Merewether, is an excellent way to experience some of the city’s best views and surfing/swimming spots.

Another attraction just only a little over 5 km from the CBD is the Blackbutt Reserve, which contains over 16 km of nature trails for hikers and joggers, a rainforest restoration area, wildlife exhibits and other recreational facilities.

A 10-minute drive from Newcastle is Lake Macquarie, a rapidly growing community on the shores of the identically named lake, which is twice the area and volume of Sydney Harbour. The lake has a shoreline of approximately 174 km, including many small sandy beaches and bays.

Also in the area are the Myall Lakes, a series of three fresh water lakes navigable by small craft. On the banks of the Myall River is the small town of Bulahdelah, overlooked by Alum Mountain, from which houseboats can be rented for exploring the lakes and their shores. Nearby Seal Rocks boasts many excellent surfing beaches.
