About ABERDEEN

The small township of Abderdeen is in the midst of agricultural countryside and is located on the side of a hill beside the Hunter River. The area was once inhabited by the Wanaruah Aborigines. Surveyor Henry Dangar camped here in 1824 during his survey of the upper Hunter area. He returned later with prospective settlers. The township was laid out in 1838 and named after George Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen. The name reflected the many Scottish settlers who took up initial land grants in the area.

Meat processing developed as the basis of the local economy, and continues to be a major contributor to this day, together with a tannery, dairying, crops, horse studs, sheep and cattle.
