About PATERSON

Paterson is situated amidst mountains on the Paterson River. It was once inhabited by a clan of the Wanaruah Aborigines. The town name was adopted from the first European in the area, Col. William Paterson who surveyed the area in 1801. In search of supplies of cedar, timber cutters followed explorers and surveyors, and by 1818 there were numerous farms along the river, some belonging to ex-convicts.

The town site was surveyed after Newcastle and Maitland, however it was not proclaimed until 1833. It became an important river port, and a service centre to the local community. Tobacco was the main crop grown, together with grains, grapes, citrus fruits and cotton. Shipbuilding was also commenced and contributed to the local economy until the decline of the river trade in the 1850s when the road to Maitland was improved, and the arrival of the railway in 1911 finished the industry.

Today, agriculture is the major source of income. There are many historic buildings to see in the township, and cafes and pubs for refreshments.
