About SCONE

The district was once occupied by the Wanaruah Aboriginal people. Surveyor Henry Dangar was the first European to come to the area in 1824 and settlers soon followed after he gave a favourable report on the area. In 1827 William Nowland discovered a pass at Murrurundi and the road which was built by 3000 convicts and finished in 1834 eventually became part of the Great North Road. A settlement which grew up around the road was officially called Invermein, and known to the locals as St Aubins. The town was officially gazetted as Scone in 1837 and the name reflected the origins of the settlers as Scone was the residence of Scottish kings and the site for their coronation.

Scone is today an administrative centre for agriculture and dairy farming, and a stock selling centre known for its' cattle and horse studs.

It is known as The Horse Capital of Australia. For equine lovers there is a Horse Festival during May and a Hunter Horse Expo held during September/October.
