About WOLLOMBI

The original inhabitants of the vicinity were probably the Darkinjang Aboriginal people. The name Wollombi is believed to be an Aboriginal term meaning meeting place of the rivers. Aboriginal sites which are believed to have been used as ceremonial meeting places can still be found in the area. Veterans of the Napoleonic Wars were granted lots here as they were discharged from around 1830. A site for the village was gazetted in 1834.

Today Wollombi is a small, historic village with beautiful 19th century sandstone buildings surrounded by tree-lined mountains. Close to the town, Yengo National Park is the largest surviving natural wilderness in NSW and it contains numerous Aboriginal sites dating back over 12,000 years.
