About the Hunter Valley / Barrington Region

The Hunter Valley is a region of New South Wales, inland from the city of Newcastle and Hunter Coast, approximately 160 km north of Sydney. The region lies between the Barrington Tops National Park in the north and Wollemi National Park.

Through the region run the Hunter River and its tributaries. The Hunter Valley is one of the largest river valleys on the NSW coast.

The Hunter Valley is a major tourist destination in New South Wales and is the 6th most visited place in Australia attracting more than 2.5 million visitors annually.

Barrington Tops, a World Heritage listed National Park is a plateau between two of the large peaks in the Mount Royal Range, believed to have be the remains of an extinct volcano. Some of the rivers flowing through the Barrington range have been classed as Wild Rivers meaning they are exceptionally pure and unpolluted.

Plant life includes a large variety of eucalypt trees including snow gums, mountain ash, mountain beech, tree ferns, a large variety of mosses and ferns and a wide range of edible plants such as the native raspberry, the native cherry and the lilli pilli.

Visitors to the park frequently stay at nearby towns of Gloucester, a centre for beef and dairy farming, and Dungog.

Among the Hunter Valley’s most popular attractions are its many fine wineries, most of which are in the Lower Hunter. The greatest concentration of these are centred around Pokolbin and Cessnock. Among the well-known winemakers of the Hunter are Lindeman’s, Tulloch, Tyrell's, and Wyndham Estate. The majority of the wineries and vineyards are open for tasting and sales.

The popularity of the wines from this region has led to the burgeoning of excellent restaurants in towns like Singleton and Scone. Scone is also famous as a major centre for thoroughbred horse breeding and racing.
