About the Hunter Valley / Barrington Region

Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley region stretches from the Barrington Tops National Park in the north to Cessnock in the south and sits between the Wollombi Valley and the Newcastle Coast. The area is best known for its wineries, and there are plenty of them here, 149 in total. These include older wineries, like Draytons and Tyrrells, which were first planted 140 years ago, both big corporate and small boutique wineries and wineries that have diversified into other produce as well like cheese, olives and olive oil, and fruit-based products like jams and other preserves.

The large number of wineries means there are a very large range of experiences available. Some wineries offer accommodation, others have a restaurant, or picnic areas and most of them offer cellar door tastings. The Hunter Resort even offers cooking classes, where groups can cook a meal using local produce and then sit down and eat it together – there are both lunch and dinner options. Older wineries like Wyndhams and Tyrrells offer tours that include older buildings and some information on local history.

You can buy a cellar door pass at the Visitor Information Centre which gives VIP access to the Wineries, and includes a comprehensive map with information and directions.

If you feel like a change from wine, you can visit Harrigan’s Cellars in Pokolbin, which carries over 130 varieties of imported beers, or swing by the Wollombi Tavern, home of Dr Jurd’s Jungle Juice.

The Hunter Valley is very beautiful, and there are many ways to admire the views. You can opt to take a bus tour or a horse drawn carriage tour that takes you to a selection of wineries. Hot Air Balloon sunrise flights are held daily, weather permitting, and scenic helicopter flights are available from Cessnock Airport. If you like the idea of flying, there are also aerobatic flights available, including one in a Trojan fighter bomber, or you could try skydiving.

There are plenty of family activities as well. Hunter Valley Zoo is located near Cessnock, and has many native animals and birds. Some farms have horse riding, and there are many historic villages to explore, especially in the Wollombi Valley. The Hunter Valley Gardens are located near Pokolbin. These gardens cover 60acres, and include a storybook garden, a sunken garden with a waterfall, and gardens with Chinese, Indian and Italian themes, all of which can be explored and enjoyed. The Ogishi Glassworks, in Cessnock is one of the few glassblowing studios in Australia and is well worth a look.

The Hunter Valley has a significant number of National Parkland and forest, for hikers and nature lovers. Watagan and Werakata National Parks are both near Cessnock. Barrington Tops, a 25 km long plateau extending between the extinct volcanic peaks of the Royal Ranges, is at the north of the Hunter Valley. It can be explored by hiking, mountain or trail bikes, or 4WD, and offers numerous walks through a variety of terrains.
