About AUSTINMER

Austinmer is a small township on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. It sits in the Northern Illawarra region, south of Stanwell Park and immediately north of Thirroul, a northern suburb of Wollongong. It is well known for its real estate and attractions such as Headlands Hotel. The hotel was originally a guest house that was very popular with newly weds in the 1930s. It has since fallen into decay & is under new ownership after several failed building development applications. There is a small commercial area on Lawrence Hargrave Drive opposite Austinmer Beach which is popular for surfing, swimming and trips from Wollongong as well as the western suburbs of Sydney.

The town is on the northern Illawarra Coastal Plain, which is much narrower than in the south. The region was first called Bulli which means land rising up, referring to Sublime Point and the neighbouring escarpment, but now that name is given to the suburb to Thirroul's south. The Illawarra Escarpment is directly west of the town, some of it's houses are situated on the side of the higher slopes. From two points the Gibson Track joins the western housing areas to the Bulli Pass Track and Sublime Point Track. These are undergoing restoration since 2003. From Sublime Point, one of the regions most famed lookouts with Mount Keira and Bald Hill at Stanwell Park, views stretch north and south along the plain. the bushland and beach setting is a major factor in the high house prices of the town.

Austinmer has two beaches between headlands. It is about here that some protected cliffs are, due to their rock structure(coal seams are visible) and age. Surfing is common here as is swimming. West of the beach on the highway are several cafe's and restaurants.
