About the Illawarra Region

The Illawarra is a coastal region of New South Wales situated immediately south of Sydney and bounded Shoalhaven region in the south, and encompasses the cities of Wollongong and the municipality of Kiama.

Wollongong is third largest urban area in New South Wales, after Sydney and Newcastle city with a long history of mining and industry, having coal mines, steelworks and an industrial port. The city is also a regional centre for the South Coast fishing industry. Like Newcastle to the north, Wollongong is growing in popularity as a tourist location, due to its many exceptional surf beaches, all patrolled by lifesavers from September to April.

Many kilometres of coastal walking and bicycling tracks have also been created from Bulli Beach to Lake Illawarra for the benefit of energetic holiday-makers. The region’s climate is also ideal for outdoor activities such as sailing, waterskiing, hang-gliding, sailing and fishing.

Symbio Wildlife Gardens, at Stanwell Tops, is another popular attraction, housing over 100 species of animals.

Lake Illawarra is a large, shallow coastal lagoon formed when sediment built up at the entrance to a bay. The towns of Dapto and Shellharbour are near the lake, which receives the run-off from the Illawarra escarpment through the Macquarie Rivulet. A wide range of water activities take place on the lake. Bicycling is also a popular pastime in the region, with many kilometres of cycleways offering a range of tours from the fairly undemanding to more challenging climbs.

North of Wollongong, the plain narrows until it hugs the coast along the northern villages. At Coalcliff and Stanwell Park, small valleys are formed allowing further settlement. To the south, the plain widens, and becomes increasingly hilly before reaching Stockyard Mountain, a long divide between the main plain and the Jamberoo Valley. South of Kiama is Saddleback Mountain and south of that the Shoalhaven plains and the outcrop of Coolangatta Mountain.
