About ALBURY

The twin towns of Albury and Wodonga are situated on opposite sides of the Murray River. The area was once occupied by the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people. Hovell and Hume explored the area in 1824 and named the river the Hume. Charles Sturt later named it the Murray River. Squatters began to take up land in 1835.

Albury is an important service centre for the area, supporting agricultural, dairying and pastoral industries. Wodonga is one of the largest stock-selling and shipping centres in Australia, due to its inland port status.

Areas of interest for visitors are the Hume Weir Trout Farm, Lake Hume with numerous water sports and picnic facilities, paddle steamer tours of the Murray, Ettamogah Pub, various parks, Monument Hill Lookout, and the Hume and Hovell Walking Track which follows the path of the explorers from Albury to Gunning.
