About the Murray Region

The Murray Region of New South Wales is the south-central area between the Riverina district in the north and the Murray River in the south.

The Murray River, the second longest river in the country, is approximately 3,750 kms in length. From its source in the Australian Alps, it meanders for most of its length northwest across Australia's inland plains, forming the border between New South Wales and Victoria before turning south for its final 500 kms into South Australia.

The Murray Region has a strong agricultural heritage, and is home to a large and varied food processing industry produces foodstuffs as diverse as dairy products, wine, bread and rice.

The region is becoming a popular destination for tourists, drawn by its many historical towns, nearby ski slopes, and an array of lakes and rivers ideal for boating, fishing and other water-based activities.

Major towns in the district include Moama, Corowa, Albury and Deniliquin.

Moama is located on the Murray, directly across the river from its Victorian twin-town Eucha. Visitors are attracted by the historic paddle steamers and riverboats run in the local stretch of river and by the opportunities for cruises and houseboating.

Corowa is also a popular centre for holiday-makers, providing a very wide range of outdoor leisure activities from camping to skydiving and glider flights. It also hosts a wide range of festivals and markets.

Albury, the largest city in the region, is separated by the Murray from its twin city in Victoria, Wodonga. It is approximately 550 km from Sydney and 325 km from Melbourne. The cities are very well positioned to be used as a base for visitors to the region wishing to explore the nearby wineries, goldfields, heritage towns and Alps.

Deniliquin, situated on the Edward River, offers bushwalking in the world's largest redgum forest, as well as being a popular destination of bird-watchers.
