About ARMIDALE

Armidale is the major centre of the Northern Tablelands. Before white settlement, the area was occupied by Anaiwan and Kamilaroi Aborigines who used it as a meeting place on trading routes between the coast and inland areas. Explorer John Oxley passed through the area in 1818 and white settlement commenced when squatters began opening up the country in the early 1830s. A slab and bark village had grown up by 1839. The site for the town was surveyed in 1848 and gazetted in 1849 and the town was enhanced by a Cobb & Co. service which was established the following year. The discovery of gold in 1852 caused renewed growth and the railway was established in 1883.

The major sources of income are grazing and the production of fine wool and dairy, timber processing, potatoes and stone fruits are other major contributors to the wealth of the district. It has a strong reputation as a major educational town, with the University of New England being the first public university outside of the capital cities in Australia.

Armidale has many buildings of historical significance, and antique, craft, gift and art shops. The New England Regional Art Gallery has a fine collection of late 19th and early 20th century Australian paintings. There are numerous National Parks in the area with spectacular scenery including mountain gorges, waterfalls and forests. For the angler, rainbow trout and brown trout can be fished in the creeks and rivers near the town.
