About GLEN INNES

The Nugumbal Aborigines visited the Glen Innes area during the warmer months, and it is believed they called it ''eehrindi'' meaning wild raspberry. In the 1830s the district was known as Beardy Plains after two hairy convict stockmen who were the first whites to work in the area north of the present town. The land was settled by 1840 and the site for the town was laid out in 1851. It was named after Major Archibald Clunes Innes, former commandant of the Port Macquarie penal settlement. The town was gazetted in 1852. The discovery of tin in 1872 caused a boom which lasted until an economic depression in the 1890s. Timber milling and commercial sapphire mining have contributed substantially to the town's economy in the past.

Today, agriculture and tourism are the main economic mainstays for the town. There are many parks, art and craft shops. The visitor can go fishing for trout, perch, redfin, cod and catfish or fossicking for sapphires, garnet, quartz, topaz and zircon. Bushwalkers will enjoy the spectacular national parks in the area: Gibraltar Range National Park, Washpool National Park and Kings Plains National Park.
