About INVERELL

Inverell is situated on the Macintyre River. The Jukambal Aborigines occupied the area prior to white settlement. Alexander Campbell took up 50,000 acres of land around 1836 and named his property 'Inverell' which is a Gaelic word meaning the meeting-place of the swans.

Merino sheep and wheat farming were fundamental to the early development of the district, as has commercial mining, since the 1870s.

Today Inverell is essentially a service centre to the surrounding farming district. For the visitor the Inverell area is popular with fossickers and the area has long been a source of much of the world's sapphires.
