About MOREE

The town was inhabited by the Kamilaroi people before European settlement, and their descendants still live in the town. The name Moree came from a pastoral run established in 1844 and is believed to originate from an Aboriginal term meaning long waterhole. Surveyor Thomas Mitchell was the first known European to arrive in the area in 1832. The town was gazetted in 1862.

Cotton, pecan nuts and wheat cultivation all evolved as major contributors to the economy of the district. The region is noted for its black soil plains and it is the largest single cotton producing area in Australia. An artesian spa evolved from a bore originally sunk in 1895 to obtain irrigation water. The waters are promoted as a curative and a source of relaxation and replenishment.
