Tenterfield is a town located in the New England region of northern New South Wales, at the intersection of the The New England and Bruxner Highways. Tenterfield is a 3 hour drive from Brisbane, 2.5 hours from Byron Bay, 2 hours from Armidale and 10 hours from Sydney. The town sits in a valley astride the Great Dividing Range at an alititude of 880m.

Just north of Tenterfield is Bald Rock National Park. The park is named after its most prominent feature, Bald Rock, which is the largest granite outcrop in Australia, rises about 200 metres above the surrounding landscape. Access to the rock is provided by a sealed road into the park and walking tracks to the summit. Two tracks are marked, a steep one up the exposed face, or an easier gradient through bushland around the back. The summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding bushland, but vegetation on top prevents a full 360° view.

An historic drive on Mt Lindesay Road takes the visitor to Thunderbolt's Hideout, a set of caves and overhanging granite rocks. It was thought to have been used by bushranger Captain Thunderbolt. Also along this road are the ruins of the Brisbane Line, Australia's second line of defence in case of invasion from the north during World War II. Visit the Centenary Cottage Museum and its local history collection and memorial to Harry Chauvel, whose Light Horse Regiment served in the Boer War. There is also train memorabilia and photographs at the Railway Museum as well as more than 100 heritage listed buildings around Tenterfield to see.
