About URALLA

The Anaiwan Aboriginal people inhabited the area prior to European settlement. A town site was reserved in 1849, and following the discovery of gold at Rocky River in 1851 and Mt Jones in 1856, the goldfields became the largest in northern NSW. The town was gazetted in 1855.

The area is well known for the production of superfine wool and cattle, and claims fame as the resting place of the notorious bushranger Thunderbolt (alias Fred Ward). There is a plaque dedicated to Constable Walker, who killed the bushranger south of the town in 1870.
Fossicking, horse riding, riding camps and pack horse treks are some of the activities in the area, as well as an aboriginal cultural walk at Mt Yarrowyck.
