About WALCHA

Walcha is situated in the New England Tablelands in the New England region of New South Wales. The town is located 425 km by road from Sydney at the intersection of the Oxley Highway and Thunderbolts Way. The population of the area is around 3,500 people.
Livestock produced in the Walcha district is some best in the country and local superfine wool has been acknowledged as some of the best in the world.

With some 156,000 ha of National Park and Wilderness in the Shire, Walcha is the gateway to some of the most magnificent eco experiences in Australia.

Apsley Falls are about 20km east of Walcha and 1km off the Oxley Highway in a deep granite gorge that is part of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. The first drop of the Falls is about 114 metres in depth, and the second, which is about 800 metres further on, plunges 195 metres to the bottom of the gorge.

Walcha is also a natural gateway to the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, one of the great national parks of New South Wales. Comprised of mainly scenic gorge country, 900 km of it is listed on the register of World Heritage sites in recognition of its importance to nature conservation.

There are many other tourist attractions including scenic 4WD trips, fishing, the State Forests, the unique Open Air Gallery, fossicking opportunities, Amaroo Museum & Cultural Centre, Pioneer Cottage museum and the local history archives.

The Walcha Jockey Club, Walcha Rodeo, Walcha Show Society and the Campdraft Club hold large annual events that extend over several days each.

With trout waters easily accessible by car, fishing is a major attraction. The cool, clear running waters of the highlands provide the perfect environment for trout populations to live and breed successfully and Walcha’s Trout Club ensures that there is always incoming stocks by replenishing the streams annually.
