About the New England North West Region

New England is region in the north of New South Wales. The area consists of the highland areas - often referred to as the New England Tableland, New England Plateau, or Northern Tablelands - which form part of the Great Dividing Range, between the Liverpool Range in the south and the border of Queensland in the north.

The New England region includes substantial areas more than 800m above sea-level, with a distinctive cold climate, distinctive vegetation and a characteristic granite landscape. The highest point at Round Mountain is almost 1600 m above sea level.

The district is often also taken to include areas beyond the highlands, which can also be considered to be the Western Slopes Region and the Liverpool Plains.

Attractions in the area include fossicking for precious and semi-precious stones, fishing and exploring the local National Parks and World Heritage areas.

Principal towns in within the New England region include Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Inverell, Armidale and Tamworth.

Tenterfield in New England’s north, near the Queensland border, is nestled in a landscape dominated by prominent granite inselbergs and mountains, the most famous being that of Bald Rock, which sits within the Bald Rock National Park. Near the park is Thunderbolt's Hideout, a series of caves and overhanging granite rocks thought to have been used by bushranger Captain Thunderbolt.

Among the attractions around Glen Innes are Gibraltar Range National Park, several waterfalls, the Australian Standing Stones commemorating the area’s Celtic heritage, and Washpool National Park. West of Glenn Innes is Inverell, the nation’s foremost source of sapphires.

Further south, and about midway between Sydney and Brisbane, is Armidale, a cathedral and university city set in landscape boasting several beautiful waterfalls.

Tamworth, in the south of the region, is best known as the nation’s country music capital. It has hosted a country music festival every January since 1973.
