About BELLINGEN

Bellingen is located 547 km north of Sydney on the Bellinger River. Prior to European settlement, the Gumbaynggir Aboriginal people lived along the banks of the river which they called 'billengen'. Cedar cutting in the area during the 1840s saw an estimated 2 million feet of cedar being extracted from the valley each year. The Bellinger Valley was progessively settled throughout the 1850s and was sustained by dairy farming and timber cutting.

In recent years there has been an influx of people fleeing from the city to the area. Bellingen has the charm of a rural centre with an urban feel created by the new arrivals.
The town has enormous character and charm, thanks to the number of historic buildings that have been preserved.

Bellingen is a country classic, with faded weatherboard facades peering out from the verandahs that line the main street. The town’s New Age tendency is obvious in the whimsical architecture and in the cafés and street advertising. Bellingen is also the centre of a lively community with a high percentage of performance artists, painters, sculptors and craftworkers.

Bellingen is also a good base for exploring the towering rainforest of Dorrigo National Park.
