About GRAFTON

Grafton is located on the banks of the Clarence River. The Gumbaingirr Aboriginal people were the first inhabitants of the area prior to European settlement in the 1830s. Cedar cutters came to the district in 1832, and ship building became a major industry. The town was laid out in 1849 and named after the Duke of Grafton. Sugar growing and dairying contributed to the early economy of the area.

Grafton today is the centre of a large agricultural and pastoral district, including dairying, sugarcane, mixed farming, pigs, cattle and fishing. The town has many beautiful Victorian buildings and numerous parks. The Grafton Jazz and Blues Festival is held annually at Easter, and the Jacaranda Festival during October. Gibraltar Range, Nymboida, Washpool and Yuraygir National Parks are all in the area.
