About WAUCHOPE

Wauchope is situated on the Hastings River. The Gadang Aboriginal people originally inhabited the area. The first European in the area is believed to be the surveyor John Oxley in 1818. The area was heavily timbered and cedar was being cut by 1820. Captain Robert Wauch settled on land on King Creek and named his property ''Wauchope'' and the town eventually developed on this site in the 1830s.

The town is now a thriving service centre to the surrounding district. Timber and mixed farming support the local economy. The major tourist attraction is the Timbertown Pioneer Village, which is a recreation of an 1880s timber town. Werrikembe National Park and the Wilson River Primitive Reserve are in the area.
