About BYRON BAY

Byron Bay is located behind Cape Byron, which is the easternmost point of Australia. Captain James Cook sailed up the coast in 1770 and named Cape Byron after Vice-Admiral John Byron, the grandfather of the famous poet Lord Byron. Captain Rous named Byron Bay in 1828, and the cedar cutters soon moved into the area, and they remained until the 1850s. European settlers moved into the area in the early 1870s and fruit and vegetable crops, horses and cattle became the mainstays of the economy.

Today Byron Bay is a popular destination for holiday makers. It has a subtropical climate, and offers surfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, rainforest walks, whale watching, tandem hang-gliding, parachute jumping, kayaking, surfing, horse riding and cycling. The greatest attraction is the powerful Byron Bay Lighthouse, which was completed in 1901. Cape Byron Headland Reserve and walking track heads both north and south from the point of the lighthouse.

The town has a range of craft and gift shops, clothing, coffee shops, restaurants and plenty of nightlife. Annual festivals are held in the town such as the Blues and Roots festival, the Triathlon, the Writers Festival, a food festival and a comedy festival.
