About MURWILLUMBAH

Murwillumbah is located 848 km north-east of Sydney and 132 km south of Brisbane in the foothills of the McPherson Ranges, and is spread along the banks of the Tweed River. The area was occupied by the Bundjalung Aboriginal people prior to European settlement. Joshua Bray, a pioneer settler and cattleman, first noted the name Murwillumbah in 1863 (the name is derived from the local Aboriginal dialect and thought to describe either a good place for camping or a good place to catch possums). Free selectors began growing sugarcane in the valley in 1869.

Dairying, sugarcane and banana growing are the main economic activities in the area. The area is close to the Gold Coast as well as Mount Warning and many World Heritage areas. The Tweed River is popular for fishing and boating, and the town has an excellent golf course. Other local attractions include the World Heritage Rainforest Centre, the Banana Festival (held in late August) and Springbrook National Park.
