About NIMBIN

Nimbin is located in the hills behind Lismore and Murwillumbah. The town name is thought to come from the language of the Nimbinjee Aboriginal people who inhabited the area prior to European settlement. Early settlers were the timber cutters and farmers in the 1840s. The dairy industry began in the early 1800s and after its decline in the 1960s, the town became Australia's most famous destination for hippies and for people seeking an alternative lifestyle.

Rich pockets of rainforest facilitate the growth of tropical fruits, and the people who have settled in the area are dedicated to alternative forms of agriculture, permaculture and organic food growing.

For the visitor, Nimbin is a time warp of the 1960s hippie lifestyle, with bright psychedelic coloured buildings, alternative health therapies, cafes serving wholesome food, and vegetarian restaurants. The arts and crafts and locals of the area can be seen in the nearby village of The Channon and their famous market.
