About the Northern Rivers / Byron Bay Region

The Northern Rivers region of New South Wales is the northern region of the state between the Great Dividing Range and the coast, from around Yamba in the south to the Queensland border.

The three rivers giving the region its name are, from north to south, the Tweed, the Richmond and the Clarence, with mouths at, respectively, Tweed Heads, Ballina and Yamba.

The Tweed is a short river which drains an area consisting mostly of the caldera of Mount Warning, one of the largest extinct shield volcanoes in the Southern Hemisphere.

Tweed Heads marks the southern end of the Gold Coast, a magnificent chain of surf beaches which stretches north to Southport. Popular tourist destinations around Tweed Heads include the surrounding Nightcap, Springbrook and Lamington National Parks, in which there is an abundance of subtropical wildlife.

To the southwest of Tweed Heads are the towns of Nimbin, Australia’s most prominent centre of hippie culture in the 1970s and still home to an annual cannabis law reform festival called “MardiGrass”, and Kyogle, gateway to many National Parks including Border Ranges and Toonumbar National Parks.

Further south on the coast is the major tourist destination, Byron Bay. Cape Byron, a headland adjacent to the town, is the easternmost point of the Australian mainland. The town has several beaches popular with nudists, surfers and whale-watchers. Byron Bay also hosts a wide range of well-attended events, such as a writers; festival, music festivals, including the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival and Splendour in the Grass, as well as yoga retreats and Pagan gatherings.

Like Byron Bay and Nimbin, the area around Lismore, known as the Rainbow Region, has links to the counterculture of the 60s and 70s. It also contains nearly a third of the state’s forest reserves and is often credited as the birthplace of eco-tourism in Australaia.
