About BOURKE

Bourke is situated on the Darling River. Charles Sturt and Hamilton Hume passed through the area in 1828 and reached the Darling River, however they did not give the area a very favourable report when they returned to Sydney. Sir Thomas Mitchell constructed a shanty fort south of the town site in 1835 to protect his men from the unwelcome attentions of the local aborigines, and he named it Fort Bourke after Sir Richard Bourke, who was Governor of NSW at that time.

Pastoralists moved into the area but did not prosper and it wasn't until Captain Randall sailed up the Darling from South Australia in 1859 that Bourke and other towns along the river became ports for transporting wool to the coastal markets for all of south west Queensland and western NSW. The river transport continued until 1931.Cobb & Co operated a coach line from 1854 until 1934 when it stopped due to the emergence of motorised transport. There are many Cobb & Co sites still to be seen in the town, which was a major terminus on the route travelled by the coach line.

Bourke is an important trading town in outback NSW and centre of a large cotton, wool and citrus growing area.
