About COBAR

Cobar is situated at the crossroads of the Barrier Highway and the Kidman Way, in the centre of NSW. It was the traditional home of the Wongaibon and Ngemba Aboriginal tribes. 'Gubar' the Aboriginal word for red ochre is believed to have been anglicised to ''Cobar''. Pastoralists moved into the area in the mid 1860s and the pastoral holdings relied heavily on the Darling River trade. The town sprang up following the discovery of copper in 1870.
The main mines amalgamated to form the Great Cobar Copper Mining Company by 1876, and the mines operated until 1920.

The prosperity of the shire relies on the mining and pastoral industries. The CSA Mine is the largest producer of copper and zinc in NSW.
