Wentworth is situated 1,075 km from Sydney, 585 km from Melbourne and 420 km from Adelaide and is located within New South Wales, on the border of Victoria. Wentworth Shire covers an area of 26,000 sq km and has a population of around 8,000 people. The southern boundary (along the Murray River) has the greatest population density in the townships of Wentworth, Dareton, Buronga and Gol Gol.

Wentworth Shire is a region of great diversity and it offers the visitor the opportunity to experience an introduction to Outback Australia. It is the gateway to Outback NSW. The area can be an arid and harsh landscape or a landscape that is soft and serene in solitude. It is a land of rivers, creeks and lagoons; of windmills, bores and waterholes. There are miles and miles of saltbush, acacia, casuarina and mallee, wide flat plains, drifting desert sands, red roads and cobalt blue skies. Stand beneath the wide canopy of the God Tree, an ancient river redgum amind rolling red sand dunes. Or climb the red dunes of the prehistoric Perry Sandhills, which are the location for many films and commercials.

Some of the events to be enjoyed in Wentworth include the Music under the Stars festival in March. Part of the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival, this annual event is held with the backdrop of the dramatic Perry Sandhills. The Wentworth Show is held in August and features displays of riding skills and bushcraft, animals, market stalls and local food and wine. in September there is the nearby Mildura Country Music Festival. With 800 hours of free music on the program, this is the third biggest country music festival in Australia.

Cellar door tastings and restaurants are a highlight of any tour to the Wentworth and Sunraysia region. Nearby Buronga is the location of the acclaimed Australian Inland Botanic Gardens. Another highlight of a visit to Wentworth is to join a guided Aboriginal tour.
